Stellar Parallax and Aberration Package: Precision Tools for Astrometry

End-to-End Stellar Parallax & Aberration Package for Astronomical Surveys

Overview

A complete software and workflow suite that measures stellar parallaxes and corrects for aberration across large survey datasets. Designed for survey pipelines, it combines calibration, astrometric solution fitting, time/coordinate handling, and quality assurance to deliver accurate positions, parallaxes, and proper motions.

Key Features

  • Full pipeline: ingestion, calibration (bias/dark/flat), source detection, centroiding, cross-matching, astrometric solution, parallax and proper motion fitting, and output generation.
  • Aberration corrections: applies annual, diurnal, and stellar aberration models using precise observer ephemerides.
  • Time handling: robust support for UTC, TAI, TT, TDB, leap seconds, and exposure mid-time calculation.
  • Reference frames: supports ICRS, FK5, and conversion to/from observed alt-az and detector pixel frames.
  • Ephemerides: integrates JPL DE ephemerides (or equivalent) for Earth’s position and velocity.
  • Uncertainty propagation: full covariance handling from centroiding through final astrometric parameters.
  • Batch processing & scaling: parallel processing, chunked sky partitioning, and cloud-friendly workflows for surveys with millions of sources.
  • QA & diagnostics: residual maps, time-dependent systematics plots, bootstrap/Monte Carlo error estimates.
  • Interoperability: outputs in VO table, FITS binary tables, and CSV; compatible with common survey databases.

Typical Workflow

  1. Ingest calibrated images and catalogs.
  2. Detect sources and compute centroids with per-measurement uncertainties.
  3. Cross-match detections to a reference catalog (Gaia or custom).
  4. Fit plate/astrometric solution per exposure (distortion + linear terms).
  5. Apply aberration corrections using observer velocity from ephemerides.
  6. Fit parallaxes and proper motions across epochs with covariance propagation.
  7. Produce validated catalogs and QA reports.

Performance & Accuracy

  • Designed to reach milli- to sub-milli-arcsecond parallax precision depending on dataset quality, epoch span, and reference catalog.
  • Aberration corrections applied at sub-mas level when using high-fidelity ephemerides and time standards.

Integration & Deployment

  • Modular components (Python/C++), command-line tools, and API endpoints.
  • Containerized deployment (Docker) and orchestration support (Kubernetes).
  • Compatible with common data storage (S3, Ceph, POSIX).

Deliverables

  • Calibrated astrometric catalogs with parallaxes, proper motions, and covariance matrices.
  • QA dashboards, residual diagnostics, and processing logs.
  • Installation scripts, user guide, and example pipelines.

Example Use Cases

  • Wide-field time-domain surveys measuring distance and motion for millions of stars.
  • Follow-up pipelines for targeted parallax campaigns (open clusters, nearby stars).
  • Validation against Gaia and other reference catalogs.
